MHS Common Data Model Now Live

WHAT IS THE MHS CDM?

  • Standardized data model that organizes and harmonizes MHS data from various sources into a single common vocabulary.

  • Designed to standardize the structure and content of observational health data to enable consistent and repeatable analysis.

  • Leverages the standard CDM model, Observational Medica Outcomes Partnership (OMOP), maintained by the OHDSI community (https://www.ohdsi.org) and used by health care organizations around the world.

WHAT DATA SOURCES HAVE BEEN MAPPED AND HOW?

  • Initially, MHS CDM 1.0 (Oct 2024) included standardized data from MHS GENESIS, TED-I, and TED-NI (i.e. Purchased care data).

  • The next refresh in January will include additional TED data, such as cost information, and DEERS data, including enrollment details.

  • Over the course of FY25, we will expand data sources to include legacy data from CHCS/AHLTA, Pharmacy Data Warehouse (PDW), DEERS/DMDC, and operational data from Theater Medical Data Service (TMDS).

WHAT TESTING AND VALIDATION HAS BEEN PERFORMED ON THE MHS CDM?

  • Conducted over 2,040 functional, technical, and business data quality checks before and after it was promoted to production.

  • For full transparency, all findings are available for analysts to review.

HOW FREQUENTLY IS THE MHS CDM UPDATED?

  • New infrastructure was provisioned for the project during FY25Q1.

  • The next full refresh is scheduled for late December or early January. Shortly afterward, the team will begin working toward implementing weekly refreshes no later than March 2025.

HOW CAN I GAIN ACCESS THE MHS CDM?

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE MHS CDM?

  • Download and read this info sheet:

  • Join the DHMS PEO Data Science TEAMS channel where you can find over 15hrs of recorded training sessions.

  • Visit the MHS CDM Page within the MIP User Group site in CarePoint.  See https://carepoint.health.mil/sites/MIP/pages/commondatamodel.aspx

  • Visit the OHDSI website, user forums, and books to learn more about how healthcare organizations around the world are leverage a CDM to expedite organization metrics, understand outcomes, and advance research.  See ohdsi.org.   This is the same data model used by many other federal agencies like VA, FDA, CMS, NIH, and many others.

  • Contact us and request a one-on-one training session.

WHAT TOOLS OR SOFTWARE WORK WITH THE MHS CDM?

  • SQL or programming languages including Python, R, or others can access the MHS CDM.

  • Currently, OHDSI ATLAS is undergoing testing and evaluation by early adopters. See attached screenshot. Once it passes all user acceptance testing (UAT), additional users will be granted access. With ATLAS, users can visually develop queries and quickly create patient phenotypes and cohorts that meet specific criteria.  See Software Tools – OHDSI for more information.
